Coffee with the Pastors
This Sunday, October 4th, at 9:45 AM, we will have our monthly time of coffee & fellowship in the Parlor. Please join us!
October At Calvary
The Sundays of October will offer us so many rich opportunities to worship and gather as a church family!
On October 4th, the Rt. Rev. Lane Sapp will return to our pulpit for a beautiful service of communion as we celebrate World Communion Sunday.
On October 11th we will celebrate the Moravian Prayer Day for World Mission with a service of singing and music! A traditional Singstunde service will combine prayer with hymnsinging, musical offerings on organ, piano, handbells, our band and chancel choir, and you! Come raise your voices and your spirit in praise!
October 18th is Moravian Prayer Day for Prison Ministry, and we will welcome the Moravian Church Southern Province's Chaplain, the Rev. Jeff Carter, to lead us in worship. We look forward to hearing about this vitally important ministry and ways in which we can participate as a church in Christ’s call to justice, reconciliation, and understanding.
On October 25th we will celebrate Reformation Sunday and welcome The Rt. Rev. Dr. Wayne Burkette back to Calvary. We are grateful to have him among us once again leading worship as we culminate the month and look forward to November, our season of stewardship and gratitude.
The Longest Table
Calvary Moravian is joining four of our downtown sister congregations, First on Fifth, Centenary United Methodist, First Presbyterian, and Augsburg Lutheran, to host The Longest Table, a community-wide meal designed to bring neighbors together around a shared table. The event will take place this Sunday, October 4, from 5 to 7 PM, right in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem: 5th Street will be closed between Spruce and Poplar Streets, in front of the Sanctuary of First on Fifth, and lined with tables and chairs for the occasion.
The idea is simple but powerful: pull up a chair next to someone you may not know and share a meal and a conversation. Table hosts will provide dinner, dessert, and all the trimmings, and guests are welcome to sit wherever looks inviting. Conversation starters will be available at each table to help the evening flow naturally, and with 40 tables, there's space for a wide cross-section of our community to take part. If you'd like to attend, community members are encouraged to preregister, as space is limited. You can register here: www.eventbrite.com/e/1997494540943?aff=oddtdtcreator. We have several members who are hosting and cooking for this event. We're excited to stand alongside our downtown church family in an evening built around hospitality, connection, and good company.
Holly Avenue Hangout - October 18th
Given the turnout and the easy, good-natured spirit of the first gathering, we're having another Holly Avenue Hangout. Mark your calendars for the next Hangout on Sunday, October 18th, from 2-5 PM at the outdoor fellowship center. Bring a snack, a game, a book, or just yourself. Everyone is welcome! If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to Lydia Ingram at: (210-882-0241).
Women’s Bible Study
Wednesday Night Bible Study
Our Wednesday evening Bible study meets at 6 PM in the Burke Room. Each week we'll dig into the upcoming Sunday's worship service: reading the lectionary passages, exploring the themes that connect them, and discussing our hymn, liturgy, and text choices. The goal is to bring a deeper, more informed perspective into Sunday morning worship. We meet in person and via Zoom so all are welcome! The Zoom meeting link is us02web.zoom.us/j/84879938980
Wednesday Night Dinner
Our next Wednesday night dinner will be at 5 PM on October 14th. Please join us for food & fellowship! Opportunity for Community & Prayer
Our next Zoom Prayer time will be Tuesday, October 13th. This Zoom prayer time will last about 15 minutes, and gives us an additional opportunity to check in and share the people and things that we hold in our hearts. The link to join the meeting is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81364100880The Next Breakfast Bunch
October 6th, 9 AM at Carriage House. Please contact Pat George (336) 971-3429 or Linda Smith (336) 978-6082 to RSVP.
Women's Day Date Change
We have had to change the date for Calvary Women's Day; we discovered that the Hispanic Festival will take place in downtown Winston-Salem that very day, and all the streets around Calvary Moravian will be closed by the city! Our new date is Saturday, October 17. Please register at the following link: forms.gle/ba2hcNmHYXQVtsYD7 , or by contacting Pastor Nola who will get you registered. And please encourage your sisters — members of Calvary and any friends you have who might like to come — to register! Our theme this year is "Anchored in Community", and we can announce, with great joy, that our speaker this fall is the Rev. Katie Bryant. This is excerpted from her biography on the Augsburg Lutheran Church website: She is Pastor of Youth and Emerging Ministries at Augsburg Lutheran. A founding board member of City with Dwellings, she has led winter overflow shelters for the city since 2014, including the Family Shelter with which we are familiar here! Pastor Katie describes her calling as "to constantly challenge the church to see how God is calling them to be in community with their neighbors." We look forward to our time of fellowship, worship, learning, and service as sisters in Christ!
